The First 9 Months Day 1:Conception Day! - Sperm & Egg unite. The zygote contains 46 chromosomes (23 from each parent). - This tiny cell contains ALL the genetic info. for every detail of the new life (color of eyes, hair, gender, height, fingerprint...)
Day 5-9: Fertilized egg attaches to Mommy's uterus.- It is about the size of the "period" used in this sentece.
Day 14: The hormones produced by the embryo prevent Mommy from having her period.
Day 21: (5 wks gestational age) The HEART begins to beat!!!! It is about the size of a poppy seed.- The foundation for everyorgan system is already established and growing.- Mommy may not even know she is pregnant yet.
Week 6 (gestational age): the origin of the entire nervous sytem (brain & spinal cord) is laid down.- eyes, jaw and limbs can be seen
Week 7: Baby makes its own blood
Week 8: elbows and fingers are evident-Baby is 1/2 inch long
Week 9: Ears and nose are developing
Week 11: Baby has all the major organ systems and is now called a "fetus"-Baby can yawn and suck-Baby is 2 inches long
Week 14: Baby can suck it's thumb- nails begin to grow- Baby can urinate and swallow- Baby is 3 inches long
Week 16: Baby is 4 inches long, 3 oz.- Mommy and Daddy can find out the gender of the Baby on an ultrasound
Week 20: Mommy can feel baby moving for the first time!- Baby girls already have eggs growing in her uterus-Baby can feel pain as early as 18 weeks(between weeks 18-32, pain is more intense than any other time in development
Week 22:Baby is 7.5 inches long
Week 24: Babies born at this age have been known to survive!- Baby can hear its Mommy's voice and heartbeat!
Week 28:Baby is 11 inches long, 2.5 lbs- eyelashes are evident, eyes begin to open-baby responds to touch and sound and has fully functioning taste buds
Week 34: Baby is 19 inches long, 5 lbs- Baby's head is full of hair and nails are grown- Baby has active sleep and wake cycles
Week 40: Baby is 20+ inches long-Baby is born!!!! *The “Days” at the beginning of this slide are measured from the date of conception.
